“Carry On” was released on October 23, 2012, as the third single from the studio album Some Nights (2012), the third of American indie pop band Fun. The writing of the song was shared between the band members Nate Ruess, Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff, and the band’s producer, Jeff Bhasker. Starting off as a slow piano ballad, the track grows into a full-band anthem, even including a guitar solo. The lyrics talk about perseverance in difficult times. The song was well received by music critics, in general, upon its release, also finding appreciable commercial success.
