It served as the second single for his debut studio album Get Lifted (2004) and John Legend co-wrote it and co-produced it with American hip-hop artist will.i.am. It is an intimate R&B ballad, with only a piano accompaniment and occasional strings to complement John Legend’s voice, who croons about the common challenges present in all romantic relationships and the difficulty of maintaining them.

The song was critically and commercially very successful and earned John Legend a Grammy Award for best R&B Male Vocal Performance in 2006.
